Don't forget your sunscreen!

STAY SAFE IN THE SUN: Wearing protection is vital, no matter your complexion

IT IS often believed that those with darker skin tones are less likely to suffer from wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and even skin cancer. This couldn’t be further from the truth. It is true that those with dark skin don’t burn as easily as those with paler skin, due to the increased amount of melanin in darker skin.

For those reasons, we can sometimes be somewhat complacent when it comes to sunscreen, sometimes forgetting it all together. On the other hand, because dark skin naturally provides protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, it prevents dark-skinned people from producing the necessary amount of vitamin D.

Exposure to the sun can cause a whole host of other problems, including increased melanin from the sun, which can cause hyperpigmentation in the form of melasma. It can cause brown patches, usually on the face. It commonly appears on cheeks, the bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and above the lips. It also can appear on other parts of the body that are exposed to regular sunlight, such as the forearms and neck.
