A dose of vitamin C...

DOSE UP: Citrus is a well-known form of vitamin C, however there are lesser-known forms, including kale

WHEN WE talk of vitamin C, one of the first things that springs to mind is the capsule supplement, but it can also be found in a number of foods, including oranges, red peppers and kale, to name a few.

Vitamin C comes with a whole host of health benefits for the entire body. Also known as ascorbic acid and L-ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, it helps the body form and maintain connective tissue, including bones, blood vessels, and skin.

Chantelle Kimberley takes us through the benefits of this underrated vitamin for your health and skincare needs.

FOR THE BODY

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin so our bodies are not able to store it, which means we need it in our diet every day.

Vitamin C is needed to protect the cells in the body. It is involved in collagen production, which helps to maintain healthy connective tissues, important for the support and structure of tissues and organs including the skin, bones and blood vessels. It helps with wound healing. Consuming vitamin C increases the amount of iron we can absorb from plant-based foods, such as kale, broccoli and sprouts.

KALE: The green leafy vegetable contains high levels of vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants that can protect against damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals as well as toxic chemicals and pollutants like cigarette smoke. Research shows that free radicals can build up and contribute to the development of health conditions such as cancer, heart disease and arthritis.

FOR THE SKIN:

Promotes collagen production

Regular use of vitamin C products can minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles because of the concentrated levels of antioxidants. It helps boost collagen production, filling in the fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in more youthful-looking skin.

Protects skin from the sun

As well as its anti-ageing benefits, topical vitamin C is also great for protecting your skin from damage, especially from the sun's UVA and UVB rays. It naturally helps to strengthen and protect your skin. Although it should not be considered as an alternative to wearing sunscreen, but alongside your regular sunscreen.

Speeds-up healing

THE GREEN STUFF: Kiwis are a great source of vitamin C

Studies have also found that high levels of vitamin C can help to speed-up the body's natural healing processes. It can help to heal small cuts, acne scars, and other blemishes more quickly and effectively.

Reduces skin discolouration

If you suffer from skin discolouration, a good vitamin C serum will help achieve a more even skin tone and better complexion. A reduction in under eye circles will also be seen. In addition to improving your skin’s overall complexion, vitamin C can brighten otherwise dull skin, allowing it to look healthier and more vibrant. Strong concentrations of this vitamin leave the skin feeling replenished and revitalised.

Improves hydration and moisture

If you suffer from dry skin, vitamin C is a must. With topical vitamin C products, you can enjoy the high concentration of vitamins that your body really needs to improve moisture content and overall hydration.
