SCENE: Dozens were injured when a ferry crashed into a lower Manhattan pier earlier today
A COMMUTER ferry has crashed into a pier in lower Manhattan injuring dozens of people, the New York City Fire Department has said.
Firefighters and rescue workers were on the scene of the accident at Pier 11, which occurred at 8:43 am (1.43pm GMT) today.
Between 30 and 50 commuters were injured in the freak accident. One person was in critical condition with head injuries, while others were carried away on stretchers with their necks and heads immobilized, reports NY Daily News.
Coast guard spokesman Charles Rowe told the NY1 television network that they still “don’t know” what caused the ferry to crash.
