Emotional day ends with no points for Chris Powell

BITTERSWEET HOMECOMING: Huddersfield boss Chris Powell

FORMER CHARLTON player and manager Chris Powell said when the fixtures came out he had pencilled in the day he was to take his new side Huddersfield Town to The Valley.

He returned to his “spiritual” football home, got a standing ovation and another round of applause in the third minute, but nothing else, as his Huddersfield side were put to sword by a rampant Charlton side, which outplayed them in every department on February 28 to earn a 3-0 victory.

A brace by Tony Watt and one from Johan Gudmundsson was enough to see off Town and enable their opponents to leapfrog them into 12th, while Powell's new side dropped to 14th in the Championship.

Powell had three spells as a player at The Valley and also served as manager up until last year, so the visit to southeast London was always going to have its challenges.

Post match Powell confessed: “We were second best all day today. My relationship with Charlton and how they are will not make me think any less of them. I am not surprised today. It was very touching and emotional for me. I wanted the start out of the way.

"I am employed by a different club now, but everyone has great memories. We needed to be on point today but we did not do that.”
