Eritrean president to visit Ethiopia

PICTURED: President Isaias Afwerki

ERITREAN PRESIDENT Isaias Afwerki will visit neighbouring Ethiopia on Saturday (Jul 14).

Yemen Meskel, Eritrea's information minister, tweeted that the president will lead a delagation to "cement... the joint march for peace and cooperation".

An aide to the Ethiopian prime minister also tweeted that the Eritrean leader will be in the country for three days and said: "We thank HE President Isaias for honoring us with a visit & we welcome him warmly!".

This comes after Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made a historic visit to Eritrea last weekend, where the leaders signed a declaration ending the state of war between the two countries after a bitter war over territory between 1998-2000.

The declaration means that transport and telephone links between the two nations will be re-established, as will direct flights – which could be reinstated from as early as next week.
