KNOWN AS one the biggest nights in entertainment and music, last night (June 24) the BET Awards held its annual ceremony in the Microsoft Theatre, Los Angeles.

The evening, which was hosted by actor and comedian Jamie Foxx, saw a slew of actors and artists take home prestigious prizes.

Although not in attendance, Beyoncé took home the Best Female R&B award and Bruno Mars won the Best Male Award.

Also in the winners’ circle was Cardi B who won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, while Migos snagged the Best Group Award and rising star SZA took home Best New Artist.

The event saw Chadwick Boseman add the Best Actor Award to his latest achievements while the record-breaking film Black Panther was awarded Best Movie.

He wrote on Twitter: “Thank you #BETAwards! I’m overseas working, but I wish I could have been there to accept my Best Actor & our Best Movie Award w/ Ryan Coogler & @michaelb4jordan.”

Movie director Coogler said: "The film is about our experiences being African-Americans and also captures the experiences of being African. It was about tapping into the voice that tells us to be proud of who we are." He concluded the speech by telling the audience to travel to Africa and learn more about the continent's history

Anita Baker was also presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's ceremony, which honoured people who had done remarkable humanitarian acts.

She said: "I would ask that the music be allowed to play, that singers are allowed to sing, and rappers are allowed to rap, and poets are allowed to rhyme.”

The night saw performances by Janelle Monae, followed by Nicki Minaj and Migos, while other big winners of the evening included director Ava DuVernay, grown-ish star Yara Shahidi, and Kendrick Lamar.

Debra Lee, who stepped down as chairman and CEO of BET last month after 32 years at the network, earned the ‘Ultimate Icon Award’. She said: “the power of black culture is unmatched. It's beautiful. It's amazing. It's everything. It's us.”
