The family fun fundraiser to attend this weekend

EVENT: Family fundraiser

THIS ORGANISATION (provisional name The Garvey Village) aims to provide services and resources to enhance personal development with health, education, employment and training as well as social and cultural activities. This organisation has completed extensive research to confirm that no other organisation currently provides this range of services in South East London or for that matter London.

Background and history

Aunty Jean’s Afrikan Cultural Market (ACM) is a very successful monthly, community event, generating income and interest from people all over London and beyond. It is also a useful resource for people of African Descent to gain and exchange information via workshops, talks and seminars.

The Market has been running for a couple of years, providing a unique space for people to enjoy quality goods from stalls and to enjoy healthy eating options such as vegan meals and has changed venue more than once to accommodate more participants and visitors and is still getting bigger and bigger each month.

The Market has also identified a need to support small business and community groups who contribute stalls selling African and Caribbean products, provide workshops on health, cultural and social identity to combat isolation and improve personal mental and physical wellbeing. Young people and children are another important client base and workshops/seminars are provided by groups engaged with young people.

The Garvey Village has developed from this initiative and is made up of contributors to the Market and interested individuals. The Garvey Village will be a space for people to access quality workshops, seminars, IT training, complementary health therapies and healthy eating options with a Vegan Cafe. Other needs identified as not being met by current provisions are: cost effective meeting spaces for new groups, information and support for people starting their own business or community group.

The Garvey Village will provide, space and support, IT Suite for job clubs and educational/training opportunities, an Internet Cafe cultural library and archives, book launches, Arts & Crafts Exhibitions/Displays to celebrate our rich history and future aspirations.

They are raising £8,000 to help secure the lease of the property for the Community Centre, The GARVEY Village Enterprise.
