Fifa chief wants action against Italian banana throwers

ABUSE: Constant, centre, was targeted by Atlanta fans (PA)

FIFA PRESIDENT Sepp Blatter has called on Italian football authorities to take action following Atlanta fans throwing bananas at AC Milan’s black players.

Milan lost the 2-1 and players such as Kevin Constant and Nigel de Jong were targeted by home fans who threw the fruit at the league game on Sunday (May 11).

Writing on Twitter, Blatter said: “Racism, and games stopped/abandoned due to acts of hooliganism. Each federation needs to act. Sanctions are available & HAVE to be applied”.

Blatter also mentioned a Russian match in which a player was punched in the head by a fan, and demanded that authorities prevent such behaviour.

Speaking about some of his side’s racist fans, Atlanta manager Stefano Colantuono told Gazzetta dello Sport: “Whoever threw the banana on the pitch deserves to have a coconut thrown back at them.

“They've ruined what was a great afternoon.”

The incident in Italy comes after the recent abuse of Barcelona's Dani Alves in Spain at a Villarreal match where a fan threw a banana at the Brazilian, which he then peeled and ate.

The response sparked an international online campaign, while Villarreal banned the racist supporter for life and were fined 12,000 euros by the Spanish league.
