First Black Miss Universe Great Britain crowned

CENTRE STAGE: Winner of Miss Universe Great Britain Dee-Ann Rodgers

FOR THE first time in British history, a black woman has been crowned Miss Universe Great Britain.

Dee-Ann Rogers took home the top honour on Saturday (Jul 14) at the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre in Newport.

Rogers competed against 40 young women from England, Scotland and Wales to take home the crown, and prior to the event she expressed her excitement at taking part in the competition.

“My aspiration in participating in the Miss Universe Great Britain Pageant is not only to advance the pageant, but also to experience a new pageant system and to be able to forge a possible bridge for subsequent Miss Anguilla winners to experience the same pageant system,” she said.

Rogers' CV is pretty impressive. She has a degree in law from the University of Birmingham and is an athlete having represented Anguilla twice at the Commonwealth Games. She also is the reigning queen of the Miss Anguilla beauty pageant.

She will go on to represent Great Britain at the world’s most prestigious beauty pageant, Miss Universe 2018.
