HEAD TO HEAD: Amir Khan, left, and Floyd Mayweather are set to fight next year
BOXING’S POUND-FOR-POUND best fighter Floyd Mayweather is to face challenger Amir Khan in what will be the most valuable bout ever to involve a British boxer, according to reports.
The highly-anticipated match is scheduled for next year on May 3 in Las Vegas, reports Sportsmail.
Khan, who came through as an amateur in the Olympics before turning professional, is expected to earn $6m from the $200m fight that will attract significant pay-TV viewers in both the US and UK.
An official announcement for the match is due to happen in the next few days – Khan’s speed is being seen as a potential test for Mayweather, who has beaten off bigger challengers before.
“Floyd has seen off the tough, heavy punchers. It remains to be seen what he will do against extreme speed and I like the Khan fight very much”, said Stephen Espinosa, chief of sports for the Showtime cable TV network which helps finance both boxers.
Khan, 26, does have youth on his side being 10 years younger than Mayweather, and the clash against the American will undoubtedly be the biggest match of his career.
Despite being the underdog, the fight will significantly boost Khan’s profile in the boxing world and beyond as he prepares to take on Mayweather, one of the sport’s greatest and most gifted fighters to ever step in the ring.
