Former Reggae Boy ready for AFCAR fixture

LOOKING AHEAD: Former Reggae Boy Lisbie is keen to participate in the AFCAR match

FORMER JAMAICAN international footballer Kevin Lisbie has warned Team Africa that he is in “top shape” as he prepares for this summer’s AFCAR football match.

Representing the Caribbean, the ever-green Leyton Orient striker told the Voice of Sport (VOS) about his favourite football moment, life in East London and the importance of AFCAR - taking place on May 27 at Griffin Park, Brentford.

VOS: AFCAR’s getting closer. Are you nervous?

KL: No, more excited. I’m looking forward to stepping out onto the pitch. We had the press conference on March 20 and from then I’ve been raring to go!

VOS: How’s life going at Orient?

KL: I’ve been at the O’s for a year-and-a-half now and it’s gone really well. I used to live in Leyton, so I’m enjoying being back. We’ve finished just a few points outside of the League One play-off places, but I’m confident we’ll able to make a push next season.

VOS: It must be nice to back home in the East End as well?

KL: It’s great being back home. My family and friends live round the corner – it’s perfect right now.

VOS: You seem to have been playing for ages, how have you managed to keep going?

KL: I think that living a healthy lifestyle helps you maintain your best performance. Luckily, I play alongside some really good attacking players – which always helps.

VOS: Why have you chosen to get involved in AFCAR?

KL: It’s been a long time coming. There’s always been a slight separation between Africans and West Indians, particularly in football. It’ll be great for everyone to mix and recognise each other’s culture and achievements.

VOS: The hat-trick against Liverpool all those years ago must have been the highlight of your career so far?

KL: It was a great game for me, but my best moment was definitely scoring my first ever Premier League goal. It was against Ipswich at Portman Road in 2001 and it took a lot of weight off my shoulders to get up and running in one of the best leagues in the world.
