France land 2018 World Cup

ON TOP OF THE WORLD: French players celebrate their World Cup win

FRANCE WON the 2018 World Cup in Russia after a 4 - 2 victory over Croatia today (July 15).

The French took the lead via a Mario Mandzukic own goal in the 18th minute. The goal was against the run of play as the Croats were enjoying the bulk of the possession as they knocked the ball about with aplomb.

They were to get back into the game via a stunning shot by Ivan Perisic just ten minutes later.

The Croatians were rocked once again on 38 minutes, this time in controversial circumstances. After a France corner, goal scorer Perisic was deemed to have handled the ball after Blaise Matuidi had headed the ball on.

The French implored the referee to check with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). He did so and after what seemed an eternity he pointed to the penalty spot. Antoine Griezmann did the rest by sending Croatian goalkeeper the wrong way.

Two long range goals by Paul Pogba and boy wonder Kylian Mbappe early in the second half appeared to make the game safe for the French.

However a howler by French ‘keeper allowed Mandzukic to make it 4-2.

Les Bleus suffered some nervy moments thereafter as their gutsy opponents looked to haul themselves back into the match one mote time.

The GFrench held on to land their second World Cup after success twenty years ago on home soil.
