Freddie McGregor: Tarrus Riley needs to find a new song!

OUTSPOKEN: Freddie McGregor (left) and Tarrus Riley

REGGAE SINGER Freddie McGregor believes that Tarrus Riley is in desperate need of another hit song.

The veteran Jamaican singer feels that fellow reggae singer Riley – who scored critical acclaim with his 2007 smash hit She’s Royal – needs to create a catalogue of hits if he’s to enjoy longevity.

“When you get a chance to become a superstar, you have to buckle down and make sure you’re doing the things that will make you the success you really want to be,” 55-year-old McGregor told The Voice.

“’I’ll give you a good example: Tarrus Riley is a great singer. Well, no, let me rephrase that: I don’t think Tarrus Riley is the greatest singer. But he has a nice vibe to him. However, he will have to find another She’s Royal very soon. As a matter of fact, he should have had that already.

“You can’t be a great superstar when you only have one song. Being a one hit wonder is something we used to joke about in music.”

The Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely hitmaker, who will perform in the UK next month (September), says that creating a strong body of work was always a priority for him.

“I never wanted to be a one hit wonder, so I made sure I had plenty of songs,” he says. “I always knew I wanted to create songs that would last for a lifetime.”

It is rather unfortunate that

It is rather unfortunate that tact is not a KEY INGREDIENT in the makeup of SOME OF the elders in reggae music.WHAT SEEMS TO BE AT WORK HERE IS AN OVER DOSE OF BAD MIND.For a long time it was aimed at D.BROWN,who chose to pretend he didnt know, much to the amusement of fans.OVER TIME IT BECAME BERES' problem, now it HAS VISITED TARRUS.I am THINKING that if the attack is always aimed at the top rated star then this critisizm is confirming the status of the artiste TarrUS as the younger generation Superstar of reggae!! They ALL have been heavily MALIGNED in some quarters, vicious rumours about their private lives but most OBSERVERS knew the real reason for these attacks. Now this is not about seniority its about appeal.

and I quote: The "Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely hitmaker...." Is this not a one hit wonder????? Tell Freddie to go sit his old ass down.

How dare him criticize an artiste that makes good and timeless music for our 21st century generation. "She's Royal" was Mr. Riley's song that put him on the map just like Freddie's "Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely", which he didn't even write! so talk bout that!!!! if he wants to talk about creating a catalog of music.

I am so sick of these so called veteran artiste bashing younger artiste....could it be that in their old age are finding themselves competing in the same arenas as artitse half even 3 times their age??? Guess they didn't do that good of a job 30-40 years ago creating a catalog as they should be selling out arenas not praying that the houses are packed just to get the bills paid.

Shame on you Freddie...if you are so passionate about Tarrus Riley finding a new "She's Royal" and creating songs that last a lifetime why don't you as an elder use your expertise and extensive years in the business to guide him Reggae music will live on.

We will never be a nation that builds each other because of assholes like Freddie.

I hope your sons are in the lab right now creating hits!!!!!! haha AS IF!!!!

Freddie McGregor: Tarrus Riley

The nerve of Freddie McGregor labelling Tarrus Riley a one hit wonder. Even if that may be the case, why let it be his concern. Sounds like envy to me, perhaps because Riley is a better looking and younger artist who have attracted some of McGregor's female fans.
A man of McGregor's caliber and maturity need not gloat and should never stoop to his level of negative critique of another artist. Many artistees hit bumps in the road and recover. If Riley was such a case wouldn't McGregor look foolish.
I have always been of the opinion that when you feel it necessary to criticize someone make it constructive criticism, not destructive or a combination of both so as to avoid an air of arrogance.
I am not a fan of Riley, and have admired and supported Mcgregor and his music over the decades, but I find his extensive criticism of Riley unappealling and not in the least bit honourable. Shame on McGregor for not encouraging Riley's whose career has stalled to stay strong and keep his head up. McGregor is much older than I and I learnt from my Jamaican elders to never stump on a man when he is down, you help him up if you can.

Tarrus Riley is a talented artist but he still is best known for She's Royal, which he released years ago. No doubt he does have a lengthy career ahead of him to make more hits, but as it stands, Freddie is right: Tarrus is yet to release anything that has matched the popularity or critical acclaim of She's Royal. I don't think he was trying to disrespect Tarrus. He was just stating a fact.

Last time I checked Tarrus has a whole album full of hits! "Superman!" Hello!! He is far from a one hit wonder. Maybe he hasn't had another "shes royal" but he still puts out great quality music. No complaints. And the new tune "Summer Fling" is awesome. He will be here for decades to come!
