Giant mural for Gabby Douglas in hometown

'AMAZING': Gabby Douglas

A U.S. OLYMPIC gold-medal-winning gymnast has a giant mural painted in her hometown of Virginia Beach to honour her achievements.

Gabby Douglas, 16, who became the first African-American to win gold in the women’s gymnastics individual, said she loves the 9-by-30 foot mural which is positioned on the outside wall of a sports bar.

"WOW!!! This is amazing!! (hashtag)so honored [sic]," Douglas tweeted Friday.

The mural shows Douglas holding a gold medal with an American flag backdrop, accompained with the tagline 'way to go Gabby.'

It has been reported that brothers Todd and Eric Lindbergh spent four days painting mural.

The news comes after superstar Beyonce wrote a heartfelt message to gymnast star Douglas on her recent success at the London 2012 Olympics.

In a post on her website, the Grammy award winner commended the 16-year-old for becoming the first African-American to win gold in the women’s gymnastics individual last week.

Beyonce wrote: “A huge congratulations to 16 year old Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas – Wow – What a thrill to watch you take this gold."

She added: “I can tell you’ve been working hard for so long – enjoy this moment, its yours."

"Thank you for inspiring all of us!” she added.
