Goal shy West Ham prepare Demba Ba bid

HAMMER TARGET: Demba Ba in action for Chelsea (PA)

WEST HAM boss Sam Allardyce has prioritised hitting the shops after Christmas for a brand new striker, and out-of-favour Chelsea forward Demba Ba is understood to be top of the list, according to media reports.

The east London club is in dire need of a goal-poacher following a run of failing to score in six of their opening 10 Premier League matches this season.

The Hammers attempted to acquire the services of Ba in the summer with a last-ditch loan bid, but failed to get their man and other frontline targets.

Times have been so desperate at Upton Park that Allardyce agreed to re-sign Carlton Cole on a three-month deal only months after releasing him, while first-choice forward Andy Carroll has been sidelined having suffered a series of injury setbacks.

The east Londoners also resigned Croatian Mladen Petric on a short-term deal.

Speaking about his striker woes, the West Ham manager said: “We tried to get three top loan strikers who play in this country but we failed to get all three.

“They went elsewhere and played for another club and one stayed where he was.

“We will have to try again depending how Carlton and Mladen go before the end of January. If they come good and Andy gets back there will be no need for another striker.”
