Golden Globes: Idris Elba and David Oyelowo go head to head

HEAD TO HEAD: Idris Elba and David Oyelowo

IDRIS ELBA and David Oyelowo will go head to head for the Best Actor gong at next month’s Golden Globe Awards.

The two actors landed nods in the Best Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television category. Elba was recognised for his role in hit BBC series, Luther and Oyelowo for his performance in HBO drama American drama film, Nightingale.

The pair are nominated alongside Oscar Isaac, Mark Rylance and Patrick Wilson and the 73rd annual ceremony, which takes place next month (Jan 10).

Elba, 43, also earned a nomination in the category, Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of the ruthless warlord in the Netflix original film Beasts of no Nation.

In 2012, the east London-born actor walked away with a Golden Globe in 2012, again for his role in Luther.

Though he didn’t win, 39-year-old Oyelowo was nominated in Best Actor for a Drama for his role in Oscar-winning civil rights film, Selma.

In Nightingale, he plays Peter Snowden, a lonely war veteran who psychologically unravels ahead of an old friend's impending visit.

“David Oyelowo deserves a #GoldenGlobes win for Nightingale. Terrifying and tragic performance,” wrote one Twitter user.

Another wrote: “Congratulations to @idriselba on his #GoldenGlobes nomination as Best Actor in a Limited Series for #Luther!”

The show will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Denzel Washington is set to receive the prestigious 2016 Cecil B. DeMille Award for achievement.
