A FRIGHTENING situation has been diffused by Kenyan authorities after an as yet unknown man broke into Vice President William Ruto's home and remained there for hours before police fatally shot him.

The official's home, near Eldoret in Kenya, was thought to be empty when the attacker gained entry.

The troublemaker barged into Ruto's home after attacking a police security guard with a machete and taking the officer's gun.

Police chief Joseph Boinnet told reporters everything is "under control" and added, "There is no threat now because he was the only one."

The incident has happened just days before presidential elections which have been violent and problematic in the past.
