SUCCESS: Guvna B
EVER SINCE Guvna B came to the attention of the UK gospel music scene in 2009 with his debut album The Narrow Road he’s become one of the most popular artists in the genre.
Now he has become the first urban gospel artist to top the official UK Christian and Gospel Music charts with his new album Odd1Out.
As you can imagine, Guvna B is giving praises to God as he enjoys his moment in the spotlight. He told Soul Stirrings: “I feel humbled to be the first gospel artist and urban act to be number one in the chart. For me it's not so much about the competition. I just feel that it's great for someone from my scene to be represented. Hopefully this opens the door for many more. I grew up on a council estate in East London. The odds were stacked against me but I'm a graduate and I have a number one album. With God anything is possible.”
It’s not surprising that Odd1Out has gained Guvna B the top spot in the charts. The album seeks to encourage young people to not follow the in-crowd, but instead to be courageous, and stand out in order to fulfil God’s purpose for their lives. It is also filled with enjoyable, thought provoking songs and collaborations with some leading artistes including Keisha Buchanan, formerly of the top selling pop group The Sugar Babes, US gospel artist Canton Jones and Jorim Kelly, a fellow artist from the church Guvna B attends, Hillsong in central London.
Many people are curious about how his collaboration with Keisha came about – after all she’s part of a chart topping, award winning pop group.
“We have become great friends in the last few years,” Guvna explained. “She saw me win the MOBO and was impressed with my stuff, and I was encouraged to hear how her faith had helped her a lot through difficult times in the industry. She's a multi-million selling recording artist so her pearls of wisdom are valuable. I call her my big sis!”
Aside from his musical endeavours, recording and touring, Guvna B also has an interest in serving the community. He is an ambassador for Youth For Christ, Compassion UK and a celebrity ambassador for the Princes Trust. He has his own show on Premier Gospel. He regularly goes into schools to mentor, run music workshops, inspire pupils and share his testimony, and later this year you can see him serving as a judge in the third series of gospel talent show Time2Shine when it’s broadcast on Sky.
With a chart topping album under his belt, Guvna B will continue to pursue his goals for 2013 which includes an Odd1Out tour in September and keeping his eyes on God.
