The Hate U Give reshoots after actor’s racist slurs surface

ADAPTATION: The film is based on Angie Thomas' debut novel of the same name

THE HATE U Give film cast have begun reshooting scenes from the Black Lives Matter-inspired production after a cast member’s racist video resurfaced online.

Before he was axed for a video in which he used racial slurs, YouTube vlogger Kian Lawley had originally played the part of Chris, the boyfriend of the main character.

In response to the Fox 2000’s decision to remove him from the film and reshoot with a different actor, Lawley said: “Words have power and can do damage. I own mine and I am sorry. I respect Fox’s decision to recast this role for The Hate U Give as it is an important story, and it would not be appropriate for me to be involved considering the actions of my past.”

KJ Apa, who plays Archie in Netflix series Riverdale, will now co-star alongside Amandla Stenberg.

Stenberg plays the role of Starr, an African-American teenager who turns activist when she witnesses police officers fatally shoot her unarmed friend.

The film, based on the book of the same name by author Angie Thomas, is highly-anticipated.

Thomas’ best-selling debut novel won the Waterstones children's book of the year prize last month. The book’s title is inspired by a quote from rapper Tupac Shakur – “The Hate U Give Little Infants F**** Everybody.”

Regina Hall, Issa Rae, Anthony Mackie, Common and Algee Smith also star in the film which does not yet have a release date.
