How to pull off bright make-up

A POP OF COLOUR: Bright shades generally work well on African skin tones

THIS SEASON is all about bold, bright colours. You may be used to seeing these dramatic make-up looks on the catwalk or easily worn by celebrities and wondered how they managed to pull-off such a dramatic look.

Well, fear no more, as Chantelle Kimberley wants to help you recreate these bold looks with a more wearable approach to keep you on trend this summer. So, if you’ve always wanted that bold lip or popping eye colour, take a look at some of her suggestions...

Lipstick is probably the easiest way to make a statement using bright colours. The classic red lip is the obvious choice, but why not try a striking blue, orange, or even an on-trend metallic lip?

It’s easy to get it wrong when it comes to eye shadows, which is why many avoid using strong colours, as they simply don’t know how to apply them. The key when using shadow is to make sure you blend, blend, blend. Smudged lines will take away the harshness – but that doesn’t mean you should be scared of making big statements with bright colours. Marc Jacobs, Urban Decay and Sleek all use highly pigmented shadows for maximum colour.

There is no better way to inject a bit of colour into your skin than a pop of colour on your cheeks. Darker skin tones hold colour well, so instead of your safe neutral tones, why not go for a deep orange or bright pink? NYX, NARS and MAC are all known for their statement colours.

Traditionally, mascara has often been either black or brown. In years gone by, however, the crazy trend of coloured mascara formed, and it is safe to say it has returned – not as big, but there is definitely room for a bit of colour on the old lashes. Yves Saint Laurent, KIKO and 3INA are all fun brands and will definitely help you create that magazine editorial look.
