'Insecure' star Issa Rae to star in The Hate U Give

“INSECURE” CREATOR and star Issa Rae has joined coming-of-age drama “The Hate U Give” opposite Amandla Stenberg, Variety reports.

The film, which is an adaption from Angie Thomas best-selling novel of the same name, will be directed by George Tillman Jr with Audrey Wells at the helm for the script.

Additional cast members include Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and Common. Rae will play April, the activist that helps Stenberg’s character find her voice and speak up.

Thomas's "The Hate U Give" centers around a 16-year-old girl named “Starr” (Stenberg) who grew up in poverty but now attends a prep school in the suburbs. Starr’s two worlds collide when she sees her unarmed best friend shot down by police.
