Jah Cure dropped from MOBOs

The reggae star has been removed from the best reggae act category due to his rape conviction

DROPPED: Jah Cure

REGGAE STAR Jah Cure has been disqualified from this year’s MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards after the event’s organisers discovered the singer has a conviction for rape.

The Jamaican singer was nominated in the best reggae act category but has now been taken off the shortlist after MOBO officials were reportedly informed of the Longing For hitmaker’s conviction for rape, gun possession and robbery, for which he served nine years in jail.

Jah Cure – real name Siccature Alcock – was arrested in 1998 and went to jail in 1999 after being found guilty. He was released in 2008.

He has since continued to perform and was announced at the recent MOBO nominations launch as one of the nominees in the best reggae category.

However, it has since been reported that Jah Cure, who married Jamaican television reporter Kamila McDonald last month, has been disqualified from the category. MOBO’s website confirms this, listing the nominees for best reggae act as Alborosie, Khago, Mavado and Damian Marley & Nas.

This year’s MOBO Awards will take place on October 5 at Glasgow SECC.

what about people who rob go to jail come out then rob again the fact is no singer from jamaica is allowed in the uk if you ve been in jail

Jah Cure may have served his sentence for rape, but he is still a rapist. My sympathy is with the victim not Jah Cure. I couldn't knowingly marry a rapist. He must have managed to convince his wife the victim lied and the sex was actually consenual, and she bought it with that pitiful look on his face. Before he found his voice and start making music he was just another dutty bwoy a run street and rob people. I'm sure he'd like to forget that, but his victims won't. Pathetic.

How judgemental of you - what he said to his now wife is none of our business and you and others seem to be making an awful lot of assumptions. You never know, he may have actually been completely honest with her and didn't have to lie/coerce her I doubt very much that she would be that gullible -none of us know and we have no right to judge. None of us really know anything about his life apart what has been printed in the newspapers and you all should know by now never to believe everything you read. I like his music and I'm not going to judge him or his wife only God alone can do that. I think they should be left alone to live their lives the same way we would want to live.

I am a fan of Jah Cure and yes I was aware of his past and no matter what many of you migfht think about him, he is a talented musician and we chose one of his songs for our first dance when we got married. Why? because the words of the song were beautiful and meant a lot to us. I'm not for one minute condoning what he did but he was punished for it and has been moving on with his life in a more positive direction - let him be. You don't have to buy/listen to his music you do have a choice you know.

MOBO award isn't worth anything anyway.

Roman Polanski is white, Jah Cure is Black, therefore they will never get the same sentence, forgiveness or acheivement for an award in any country at any time. Plus Polanski is more well known globally for his work in the film industry and in white man world money can make any negative disappear.

So what you are saying that it's acceptable as a white person and convicted peadophile with money and globally 'accepted' to carry on with his career as Roman Polanaski did - and remember he refuses to return to the USA as he will go straight to jail so that tells me he feel he's done nothing wrong the US also don't seem tobe in any hurry to extradite him either)and as a black person you are not even though Jah Cure went to prison for his crime?? There is something fundamentally wrong with a statement like that.....

Why all the hysteria over this??? Jah Cure didn't ask to be nominated - until his past was brought up, MOBO thought his music worthy of a nomination so why beat him with a stick??

I think some people are clearly losing sight about this whole story - until the Voice wrote about this I doubt you had any interest in his past and I doubt very much you or anyone else, me included are in a position or have the right to judge anyone - a higher power will do that. I also think your comment about his wife is incredibly judgemental and uncalled for.

Let's face it The Voice knew that in publishing this article it would get this kind of reaction - nice move - NOT!

How can it be The Voice's fault that the man is a convicted rapist? Several other publications reported that Jah Cure had been dropped from the MOBO nominations because of his conviction. Were they all trying to cause hysteria too? Newsflash: reporting NEWS is what NEWSpapers do. The clue is in the name fool!

@ Thu, 2011-09-08 21:41 - at the end of the day he was rightly convicted and served his time for this and he has put this behind him - I personally don't see the need to continually demonise him.

People need to move on - and as for his wife being a disgrace for marrying him - why is she? They met and fell in love and they have made a comittment to each other and I am sure that she is well aware of his past and that is exactly what it is, his PAST and I wish them nothing but happiness - his conviction aside, I actually think he is a very good artist and worthy of a MOBO nomination though I don't think him being dropped from the nominations will have a huge impact on his career tbh.

I agree with another poster with regards to Roman Polanski and his conviction for having underage sex - he was allowed and continues to make films and no-one ostracised him did they? Hey he's even got an Oscar nomination and I don't hear people demonising him though!!

Everyone should be deserving of a 2nd chance and Jah Cure has been given one - leave him be - we are not in a position to judge anyone else as none of us are perfect.

JAH CURE looks so pitiful, like he is asking for sympathy and forgiveness. Did he show any sympathy and ask forgiveness of the poor girl he raped? She is traumtized for life by his selfish sexual act.

No woman should knowingly marry a rapist. That's ridiculous. His wife (can't believe he has one) must have done it for his money or his fame.

I DESPISE RAPE. IT IS SUCH A VIOLENT SEXUAL ATTACK ON A WOMAN. MEN, IF A WOMAN DON'T WANT YOU ACCEPT THAT, DON'T FORCE YOURSELF ON THEM. NO MEANS NO. I'm happy the victim press charges. I hope she sued him in civil court and get some of his money.

I am not sure that the victims of either case would agree with you. Furthermore the gun possession and armed robbery bit may also be of concern. If only more people bothered to comment about the injustices of rape over the injustice on missing out of glorification for music - maybe the world would be a better place. I think our priorities and values are a little bit messed up here.

Roman Polanski a film director, was convicted for raping an underage girl, however his film recently got nominated for the Oscars (which is 10x bigger than the Mobos). The same should apply to Jah Cure, if his music is good enough, he should be nominated. What is he gonna do rape someone at the show?
