Jail organisers of Italy boat tragedy

DEADLY OPERATION: Italian authorities haul bodies from the boat disaster (PA)

BY FAR the most distressing sights in the news recently was the boat tragedy in Italy where over 100 desperate African migrants perished in the Mediterranean.

Their horribly overcrowded boat – taking them to a seemingly better life - caught fire and capsized.

The boat was reportedly carrying about 500 Eritrean, Somali and Ethiopian migrants seeking a new life in Europe and is one of the worst disasters on the route sailed each year by thousands of Africans.

My father was African so I really felt this story big time.

I just kept thinking of all the money each traveller must have had to save to make this hazardous journey in the hope of giving them and their families a better life and the desperation one must be in to endure such inhumane travelling conditions.

To see the rows of bagged corpses lined up on the island's quayside was heart-breaking as it’s not just their lives that have ended, but also generations of people such as their future sons and daughters that would have been born and prospered had they survived.

However, my despair turned quickly to anger.

Those people who organised these trips and profit from desperation need to be taken to task and imprisoned.

Sadly I fear tragedies like this will continue until we address the real problem.
