HAIR RAISING: Aston’s famous hairdo and right, with his JLS bandmates
THEY’VE had chart-topping hits and scooped numerous awards and apparently, a “key ingredient” to JLS’s success is Aston’s hairdo!
The popular British quartet – comprised of Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes, Jonathan ‘JB’ Gill and Oritsé Williams – are well known for their slick styling, and for many – particularly black women – Aston’s super-straight relaxed barnet has been the source of much conversation.
Though the 23-year-old has since shaved off his locks in favour of a shorter crop, his bandmates say his hairdo remains an intriguing topic for many.
“It always cracks me up when people ask about his hair,” Oritsé told The Voice. “Black women in particular are always intrigued about his hair!”
Band member Marvin added: “Aston’s hair is a key ingredient to JLS’s success,” before JB chipped in: “It’s absolutely pivotal!”
Asked about his famous hairdo, Aston said: “When I was younger, I’d have it relaxed or S-curled or I’d blowdry it out. But I’ve cut it all off now; I fancied a change.”
The singer, born to an Irish mother and Jamaican father, says that his latest look has made his ethnicity more obvious.
“It’s funny, because after I cut my hair, someone said to me, ‘you actually look mixed race now,’” Aston laughed. “Before, they couldn’t quite place where I was from, but now, they think it’s obvious!”
JLS’s new album Jukebox is out on November 14 on Epic Records

CommentsSo him scraping off all his
So him scraping off all his hair, or straightening his locks has been central in their view to the success of the group.
Its sad, as it shows black men are as I long suspected cutting off all their hair, or strightening it to "fit in" better with the eurocentric society we live in.
We dont often see black men wearing an afro these days, the days of the 1970s and the black pride movement have long gone.
I always wanted to believe black men scraped off their hair "because it makes me look more sexy" as some put it.
But deep down I suspected it was an attempt to minimise their black features and roots.
It's just nice to see a group
It's just nice to see a group of young men looking trendy & being themselves & not like everyone else. Good on you guys!
