Joshua to be spot on?

FAVOURITE: Heavyweight king, Anthony Joshua

ANTHONY JOSHUA is the clear 2/5 favourite with Ladbrokes for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) award, following a miserable Wimbledon for previous frontrunners Andy Murray and Johanna Konta.

The pugilist known as AJ is expected to fight Wladimir Klitschko once more before 2017 is out, and the bookies are anticipating a further cut in those odds by the time the SPOTY winner is announced.

Murray had been 10/1 a month ago although he’s since drifted to 33/1 after disappointing Queen’s and Wimbledon per- formances, while Konta has been pushed out to 14/1 having been 5/2 before her semi-final clash with Venus Williams.

IN THE RUNNING: Bournemouth ace Defoe

Jermain Defoe is behind Joshua in the betting at 13/2 while previous winner Lewis Hamilton is a 20/1 shot for his second BBC gong.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said:

“This was a big fortnight for AJ’s chances of winning the SPOTY award as a win for either Konta or Murray would’ve dented his chances massively.

“However, the unified world heavyweight champ has benefited from that pair’s SW19 failings and now looks a shoo-in for the gong.”
