Joy in Unity!

POSITIVE: A page on the calendar

TWO SISTERS from Leicester were so determined to showcase high-achieving Carib-bean people they put together a calendar to salute them.

Theresa Hutchinson and her sister Fiona are to launch their ‘Unity’ calendar in mid-January, to celebrate local African-Caribbean people.

“The reason for this is that we felt that we wanted to showcase all the people in the community and give them something a little different to hang on their walls for 2012,” said Fiona, who owns event management company Positive Vibrations UK.

Her sister Theresa came up with the idea of Unity Calendar 2012 after working in the African-Caribbean community for more than 10 years.

Theresa, a community service officer, told The Voice she was inspired to create the calendar because “every year when I try to buy a calendar, I find it hard to find something I want to put up on my wall. This year, I wanted to do something different with the community where I work.”

The sisters arranged a photo shoot with 90 members of Leicester’s African-Caribbean community, with participants representing their Caribbean island.

The calendar, which was sponsored by local black businesses, also features local sports people, religious leaders, DJs and various black business people.

Theresa said the photos reflect page themes that are based on business, Caribbean islands, sport and religion.

The sisters have printed 1,000 calendars and are “selling them around the East Midlands and online,” Fiona said.
