Judo joy for Team GB

WINNER: Cousins

BRITAIN ENJOYED a successful final day at the London British Open European Cup as four of their judokas captured gold on May 13.

Thomas Davis edged out countryman Tom Reed in the final of the –81kg category after defeating Reed by a golden score ippon.

There was also gold for 2008 Olympian Peter Cousins who claimed five victories in the -100kg category.

Cousins, a former world championships silver medallist, said: “That was a lot of fun, it’ll be my last British Open. I was focused just on taking it one fight at a time and gave it my all.”

Two more golds were clinched by Kelly Edwards in the -48kg category and Sophie Cox at -52kg.

On Saturday (May 12), Ashley McKenzie was victorious in the -60kg class and there were also golds claimed by Gemma Howell and Gemma Gibbons in the 163kg and the -78kg class, respectively.

McKenzie added: "I had a lot of support today, I love competing domestically and being a London boy I hope I can be selected for the Olympic Games and count on the home support backing me all the way."
