STRIKE: Kenyan men are boycotting home made food to raise awareness on domestic violence against men
A MEN'S lobby group in Kenya has called for a six-day hunger strike to raise awareness about domestic violence against men, it has been reported.
The organisation, Maendeleo Ya Wanaume, is said to be urging Kenyan men to stop eating meals cooked by wives and partners and instead eat together away from home while sharing experiences.
Ndiritu Njoka, leader of Maendeleo Ya Wanaume, which means 'Development for Men' in Kiswahili, told the BBC's Network Africa that the nationwide boycott was an attempt to try to stop women beating up or emotionally abusing their partners.
The group says the situation has worsened over the years as Kenyan women have become more economically independent and claims the government does not take domestic violence against men seriously.
Maendeleo Ya Wanaume was reportedly set up to try to encourage men to speak out in a society that often ridicules men who are battered as weak.

CommentsFor those sceptics reading
For those sceptics reading this, in the West, domestic violence against men accounts for 40 to 50% of domestic violence. Men just dont tend to be taken seriously, and women accused of violence get 60% lighter sentences. Im sure its no different in neo colonial Kenya, where western "values" are adhered to. Read about the experiences of men who have been victims of domestic violence.
A recent crime survey, revealed men account for at least two in five victims of domestic violence. However the media either glorify violence against men, or find it funny, whilst showing shock when it happens to a woman, so its little wonder this issue is never taken seriously by those in authority.
