LABOUR MP Kate Osamor has been accused of misleading the public over her son’s drug conviction and threatening a Times reporter who sought to question her about the case.

Osamor, who resigned from her role as shadow international development secretary on Saturday, had been under fire for hiring her son to work in her office because of his drug conviction.

Ishmael, a senior communications officer in Osamor’s parliamentary office, was found to have £2,500 worth of drugs on his possession at music festival Bestival last year.

The 29-year-old, who said that he was looking after the drugs for friends, something that was accepted by the judge, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine and cannabis, was sentenced to 200 hours community service.

According to reports, the MP for Edmonton had said that she did not know of his offence until after he was sentenced but it has since been revealed that she wrote one of the reference letters that contributed to the judge’s decision to not give her son a custodial sentence.

In addition to the criticism she is facing in relation to her son’s conviction, Osamor is also under fire for reportedly telling a Times reporter to “F*** off” and throwing water at him.

The Times has alleged that Osamor told the reporter, who turned up at her home on Friday to ask her questions in relation to Ishamel’s case, that she “should have come down here with a bat and smashed your face in”.

In a statement, Osamor said: “I am resigning my position as shadow international development secretary to concentrate on supporting my family through the difficult time we have been experiencing.

“I remain fully committed to our programme for creating a society that works for the many, not the privileged few, and will continue to campaign for this from the backbenches.”
