Lenny Henry gets best actor prize for 'Fences'

AWARDED: Lenny Henry with his best actor gong (PA)

LENNY HENRY has been handed the prestigious best actor prize at the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards for his portrayal of Troy Maxson in American drama Fences.

The comedian and actor, who is better known for his funny roles and stand-up performances, collected the accolade today (Jan 28) at the awards’ 25th annual event which was held at London’s Prince of Wales Theatre.

Henry told the BBC that acting in the play had been “a massive emotional journey”.

He added: “Every day was like a therapy session, but with lots of laughter.”

The play in which he plays the anti-hero follows the story of a washed up ex-baseball player and his troubled relationship with his son, who dreams of becoming a baseball star in his own right.

The awards honoured other names in theatre, including Lucy Kirkwood’s play Chimerica, and actor Rory Kinnear for his role as Iago in Othello at the National Theatre.
