A Level Results day: Black excellence all around

TOP MARKS: East London student Joseph received 4 x A*

THIS YEAR’S results day has been marked by a record number of University acceptance places as top grades took a marginal fall for the fifth successive year.

According to UCAS, (Undergraduate Courses At University And College) 424,000 places have been offered, up by 3 per cent on results day last year.

Leyton Sixth Form College (LSF), in Waltham Forest, celebrated outstanding exam results after it’s A level pass rate exceeded 99.5 per cent (and that from some 1100 subject entries, by far the largest in the Waltham Forest borough).

Vocational results also merited a place on the victors’ podium. All 358 students who completed an extended diploma were successful – just under half of them achieving straight distinctions or starred distinctions, the highest grades possible.

Principal Kevin Watson was delighted with these outcomes.

“LSC clearly has its fair share of Mo Farahs, Laura Trotts and Usain Bolts” he said. “As with those star athletes our students are reaping the rewards both of their own hard work and of some expert coaching and support."

In another east London institute, Brampton Manor Academy sixth form celebrated a number of standout students whose grades have guaranteed them spots at top universities including Cambridge, Bristol and Nottingham.

The academy which stands adjoined with a secondary school had 87 per cent A* - B grades with a 61 per cent of the grades being A* or A grades.

The school led by Dr Dayo Olukoshi who recently received an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honors for services to education has been named as the number one sixth form in the Newham borough.
