BRITISH FANS of basketball are in for a treat this month as the best of this country’s talent gets together in south London for some slam-dunk action, including NBA star Luol Deng.

The Joe White Classic Basketball event features a day of courtside drama and motivational sessions in honour of grassroots coach Joe White, who developed a fabled knack for spotting talent and lifting kids out of trouble.

The event aims to inspire the next generation of ballers, and utilises the expertise of Chicago Bulls giant Deng, Team GB captain Andrew Sullivan, and Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Attendees will have the chance to take part in a game of “Beastball”, an adaptation of the sport that has been likened to cricket’s Twenty:20 version, as well as many other activities.

Deng, who trained in Brixton honing his skills before his big move to the US, spoke of his excitement for the event.

He said: “I’m so happy that I will be able to attend the Joe White Classic this year.

“Joe’s legacy still lives on as a great coach and person.

“I look forward to seeing the basketball community coming together to show support and respect to a truly great man.”

Sullivan added on Twitter: “For all basketball fans this is an easy follow, for those who don’t know Joe White was, it’s simple the greatest of all time”.

The event takes place on August 24 at the Crystal Palace National Arena
