Maggie Alphonsi named as London Youth Games patron

ENGLAND RUGBY powerhouse Maggie Alphonsi has been confirmed as a patron for the 2015 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games.

The event has been going for 37 years and last year’s were the biggest in its history with 126,897 people taking part in what is Europe’s largest annual sports event for the young.

Alphonsi, who has enjoyed stellar career in the women’s game that include 74 caps for England, featured in the 1999 edition of the London Youth Games where she played for her home borough of Enfield.

Speaking about her new role as patron of the games, Alphonsi said: “It is a real honour… The London Youth Games is where I first took up rugby and really got the bug for it.

“Representing my borough was very special and gave me the motivation and direction to push on.”

The powerful player, nicknamed “Maggie the Machine, added: “For any young Londoner, the London Youth Games is an incredible event to be part.

“It opens doors and opens your eyes to a wider world of sport with thousands of other like-minded people from all across London.”

The event runs for 44 days, featuring 87 competitions across 34 sports. It begins with a cross country run from Parliament Hill on November 15, 2015.
