Man to be sentenced for Ku Klux Klan golliwog hanging video

DISTURBING: This is a still taken from clip posted by Christopher Philips on YouTube

A WOLVERHAMPTON man will be sentenced next Thursday (Dec 19) after uploading videos with “shocking” racist content to YouTube.

Christopher Philips, formerly known as Darren Clifft, 23, was found guilty of stirring up racial hatred after posting a clip showing a life-sized golliwog being hanged by someone in a Ku Klux Klan costume.

Phillips, a kick-boxing tutor, was arrested by counter-terror officers after he uploaded three clips of the shocking mock execution.

The videos were allegedly filmed in March at a right wing extremists’ music concert in West Wales, attended by dozens of people.

Described a “racist yob”, Philips referred to himself as “Clansman of the West Midlands infidels” on Twitter.

During the hearing in October, he appeared to give photographers a “white power” clenched fist gesture while leaving the court.

His dad took his own life shortly after he was arrested and quizzed – and Philips has received death threats.

His lawyer Mohammed Ramzan told the court: “His life was threatened. People attended the gym where he coaches.

“Fortunately for him he was ill that day, so not there. It was a gathering of quite a few people with weapons.”

Philips pleaded guilty to distributing a recording of visual images that were intended to stir up racial hatred at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The presiding judge John Warner warned him of “a period in custody.”

Philips has been ordered not to access any social media websites.
