Man jailed for threatening to kill ex

JAILED: Duran Braithwaite

A MAN has been jailed for four years for making threats to kill his ex girlfriend.

Duran Braithwaite, 30 was also given a 10-year restraining order not to go near the 21-year-old victim.

Braithwaite, from Islington, north London, was in a relationship with the victim when they broke up in December.

From 15 December until early February 2011, Braithwaite harassed and terrorised the victim with text messages that became increasingly threatening and hassled her at her work place.

In what is known as a victimless prosecution, where the victim decided not to pursue the allegation any further or testify at court, officers from Islington’s Community Safety Unit were able to continue and pursue the charge.

They carried out a detailed investigation and gathered enough evidence to charge Braithwaite with threats to kill and take him to court.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Becky Saunders, said: “I am pleased with the sentence Braithwaite has received.

“In a lot of cases of this nature, the victims are either afraid to pursue their allegations further or do not want to get involved with police, but this case demonstrates Islington police’s commitment to tackling domestic violence with or without input from the victim.

“We will continue to robustly pursue offenders who harass and abuse people and bring them to justice and encourage victims to come and speak to us in confidence, we will help you.”
