JAILED: Jerome Isaac (middle) being taken into custody by police officers

A MAN accused of setting a 73-year-old woman on fire in a New York lift has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Jerome Isaac, 47, was handed the term at Brooklyn criminal court, New York, where he was remanded in custody without bail over the December 2011 death of Deloris Gillespie.

The court saw CCTV footage showing Isaac walking into the lift wearing white gloves and with a dust mask on his head, before spraying the victim with gasoline and lighting her on fire.

Ms Gillespie died as a result of her burns and smoke inhalation.

The suspect, who receieved burns to the left side of his face from the attack, reportedly told police that he killed Ms Gillespie because she owed him $2,000 for 'odd jobs' he had done in her apartment.

Assistant District Attorney Kenneth Taub said outside of court: "I know this is the defendant's first offense, but the depravity of this particular single act is beyond my description."
