Man who wanted to join police shot dead by officer

PICTURED: Jemel Roberson

A 26-YEAR-OLD security guard has been fatally shot by a police officer as he was restraining an armed suspect on the floor after a shooting in a nightclub, according to reports.

It is understood that Jemel Roberson, who was employed at Manny’s Blue Room Bar in Chicago, had thrown a group of men out of the venue before one of them returned with a gun and fired shots in the club.

Roberson, who legally owned a firearm, returned fire and then caught one of the suspects, according to witnesses.

A witness named Adam Harris told Fox32 that he believes the police thought Roberson was one of the bad guys when he had apprehended them.

"The security guard that got killed, he caught somebody and had his knee on him the whole time," Harris said.

"Just waiting on the police to get there. I guess when the police got there, they probably thought he was one of the bad guys, [because] he had his gun on the guy and they shot him.

"Everybody was screaming out 'security, he was a security guard’...and they still did their job and saw a black man with a gun and basically killed him,” Harris added.

A lawsuit seeking damages in excess of $1 million has been filed against Midlothian police department by Roberson’s mother.

The family are being represented by attorney Gregory Kulis.

Kulis told American news service WLS: "Jemel was trying to save people's lives. He was working security because a shooting had just taken place in the establishment.

"So, he was doing his job and holding on to somebody until...police arrived

"And a police officer, our feeling is, did not make the proper assessment and fired and killed Jemel."

Roberson, the father of a nine-month-old boy, served as a musician at several churches and was planning to become a police officer, local news station WGN has reported.

The Midlothian police department have not released the identity of the officer who shot Roberson.
