Managing the mindset

NO BARRIERS: Dion Johnson

AS THE world recognises that age is no barrier to fulfilling one’s dreams, the work of Dion Johnson, a specialist mentor to professional women becomes more and more in demand.

Johnson’s company, founded eight years ago, helps professional women aged 40 plus make the transition from a ‘management mind set’ to a leadership one, so that they develop courageous ‘self-leadership’ in order to create the life that they want and do the work they want - a process that Johnson herself has undergone.

Prior to starting her company, Johnson was an award-winning midwife, earning a good salary, enjoying a good lifestyle and singlehandedly raising her daughter.

However she started to feel unfulfilled in her work and wanted to do something different. She said: “In 2004 I took a massive leap of faith and handed in my notice with no idea what was next for me, just a deep knowing in my belly that there was more and I needed to take this step to find it.

“I spent the first 6 months in my dressing gown, crying out to God as the harsh realities of no income, and no clear direction hit me and hit me hard.”

Johnson found the direction she was looking for. She retrained as an executive and performance coach, studied psychology and neuro linguistic programming and embarked on a new role as a mentor to ‘mid-life’ women looking to have more fulfilling working lives or do something completely different.

She helps women do so via workshops, talks and coaching and as a result her business is now thriving.

This award-winning businesswoman believes that when women are dissatisfied in work, they shouldn’t ignore it.

She said: “Dissatisfaction, work and life crisis, boredom, and disillusionment are all part of life’s way of alerting us that we are ready for the next stage of the transformation process. It’s an opportunity to evolve into another dimension of self-expression and being.”

One thing Johnson is big on, is authenticity. She was born with a facial disfigurement, and hid it with an artificial eye and dark glasses.

After a series of different events happened in her life, she decided she couldn’t wear her ‘mask’ anymore and decided to show people and start talking about the real Dion Johnson.

She recalled: “The more candid and authentic I become, the more I am attracting the attention of professional women who know there is more to them than they are currently being. It’s amazing.”

Everything Johnson does is undergirded by her faith. “I like to describe Jesus as my CEO. My love, drive and sense of mission is a direct result of my love and relationship with Him. Everything you see me do in service of the women is inextricably linked with my service to my heavenly boss – it’s really that simple.”

The future is looking bright for Johnson. She is currently collaborating with others to host events that will help mid-life women and she is getting ready to launch a new 30-day online programme called ‘REThink You’, which will give professional women, looking to change their lives, access to her wisdom and group support.

And she’s confident that life is looking good for women aged 40 plus.

“I am fully persuaded that God has big intentions for professional midlife women in His plans to bless the world.”
