Manchester student ready for her big test

TALENT: Tyra Watson

MANCHESTER STUDENT Tyra Watson will join over 750 of Britain’s best athletes going head-to-head for selection for this summer’s Olympic Games at the Aviva 2012 Trials from June 22-24 at Birmingham Alexander Stadium.

Tyra was selected for the women’s 400m hurdles when she qualified with a record breaking 63.05 seconds at the Trafford Open Meet at Longford Park last August.

Originally from Saddleworth, the 19-year-old will be focusing on improving her times for the 400m in Birmingham. The competition is set to be fierce as Britain’s best athletes are whittled down to the chosen few. She said: “I couldn’t believe it when I found out I had qualified, it was a total shock. I am so excited now and I am really looking forward to it.”

Studying Sports Development in her first year at Manchester Metropolitan University, Tyra is continually developing her skills and knowledge in athletics and sport. She said: “I have always been into athletics since I was five years old. My P.E. teachers have always encouraged me to do sports and help me progress in my running.”

For the past five years Tyra has been member of Sale Harriers Manchester, one of the foremost athletics clubs in the country. The club has benefited greatly from the legacy of the Commonwealth Games in 2002, with access to the warm up track and the indoor centre at the Sports City complex.

With her sights also set on the European athletics under 23-championships and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, one of her other long term career goals is to coach in schools across the region.
