Mayor Situ's family launch foundation a year after his death

FOUNDATION: Mayor Situ died of cancer last year

FAMILY MEMBERS of one of London’s best-loved local councillors has launched a foundation in his memory.

The son of Tayo Situ, the former Mayor of Southwark, who died after a short battle with cancer in May, has set up the Tayo Situ Foundation (TSF) to help young people reach their full potential.

Michael Situ said that the foundation would “recognise, encourage and celebrate youth achievement.”

The 26-year-old, who is also a councillor in Peckham, which sits within his late father’s former south London borough, told The Voice: “It will foster a community where young people have the full opportunity to achieve their potential and are recognised as an integral part of society.”

The Foundation, which has gained support from the head of the Diocese of Southwark, Bishop Christopher Chessun and local MP, Harriet Harman, was launched in the Council’s main building on Tooley Street last week (Feb 17).

Michael, who is planning several events and activities to coincide with the one year anniversary of his father’s death, continued: “It will support other organisations and work in partnership with them to develop local talent who could later become role models and mentors.”

The late Mr Situ, originally form Osun state, in Nigeria, died a year after taking up his mayoral position in 2010.

“He was a very caring person who wanted more support for young people. It is good to see TSF carrying on his work,” Michael said.

He continued: “Over 30 community leaders including the Mayors of Southwark and Lambeth, Leader of Southwark Council, Leader of Liberal Democrats in Southwark and several faith leaders across the borough attended the launch.”

“I am happy that the Foundation is up and running. My dad always wanted to set up a Foundation that would work to support young people in Southwark and the wider area. I hope that this Foundation will fulfil his dreams and his vision for young people.”

The Leader of the Council, Cllr Peter John, who was also in attendance at the launch, said: “I am happy to be a Patron of the Tayo Situ Foundation.
