Meet the black Brit inventor on the rise

INVENTOR: Connor Peter Musoke-Jones

INNOVATION FOUNDATION Nesta, supported by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), has announced ten finalists, from hundreds of budding applicants across the country, for The Inventor Prize.

The nationwide search to find the UK’s best new inventors has uncovered ten new ideas that could transform the lives of people throughout the UK.

Shortlisted entrants include 21-year-old Connor Peter Musoke-Jones, who is currently studying at Brunel University, and originally from Leatherhead.

Inspired by his friend and housemate, who found it difficult to open doors, Musoke-Jones has invented an inclusive door handle that is easier and cheaper to install than fitting specialist doors.

It has been developed in collaboration with people with various hand and arm disabilities, to be as intuitive as it is beautiful. He is currently on a sandwich year and working on the Unity Door Handle in conjunction with his studies.

Connor Peter Musoke-Jones said: “As a kid it was always my dream to become an inventor. My teachers told me that it wasn’t a job that existed anymore.

"Then, while studying Product Design at university, I lived with a friend who had a hand and a stump on the other arm, and would struggle to open doors. I realised that there hadn’t been an innovation in the door handle for quite some time and I began to consider creating an inclusive door handle."

The Inventor Prize was launched in August 2017 to harness Britain’s inventive spirit and answer some of society’s biggest issues. Ten shortlisted entries, which were unveiled last week (Jan 26), will receive £5,000 to develop their idea and mentoring from Barclays Eagle Labs, who are providing access to facilities and equipment, and individual coaching. The overall winner, announced in September 2018, will receive a £50,000 prize to help get their product to market.
