Mellody Hobson to become Starbucks vice chair

AFTER A few highly publicised racist incidents taking place at Starbucks stores in the US, the major coffee chain seem to be taking diversity seriously - and have announced that Mellody Hobson will become vice chair at Starbucks once chairman Howard Schultz steps down from his post at the end of the month.

Hobson, who is the president of the largest black-owned money management firm in the U.S. , Ariel Investments, LLC., and wife of George Lucas, currently serves as a director on Starbucks’ board and has also served on the boards of Estée Lauder, DreamWorks Animation and Groupon, according to Fortune.

Schultz announced on Monday (June 4) that he would be stepping down as chairman at the coffee chain, which he’s been a part of for 30 years. According to Ebony.com, It is rumored that he is considering a run for president in 2020.

In a statement, Starbucks said: "These appointments continue Starbucks' history of world-class, values-based board members, comprised of accomplished leaders representing diversity and excellence in global technology, retail, consumer experience and other relevant skill sets."
