Met cop fired after saying man will ‘always be a n****r’

SACKED: Former officer Alex MacFarlane will 'not wear a uniform again'

A METROPOLITAN Police officer has been sacked without notice after ranting at a man detained under his supervision that he will “always be a nigger”.

Alex MacFarlane, 54, was booted out of the force in disgrace once the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) recommended his dismissal.

The former officer, who was based in Newham, east London, told Mauro Demetrio: “The problem with you is you’ll always be a n****r”.

MacFarlane also said: “You will always have black skin”.

The racial tirade occurred in 2011 when Demetrio was arrested and detained in a police van – handcuffed, he managed to record the rant on his mobile phone and complained to the police watchdog in August of that year.

In April 2012, the IPCC judged that MacFarlane had a case to answer for gross misconduct after two juries failed to reach a verdict on whether the officer had committed a racially aggravated public order offence.

MacFarlane has been dismissed for gross misconduct.

IPCC commissioner Jennifer Izekor said: “This was a particularly disturbing case which caused offence to Mr Demetrio and rightly outraged the community.

“PC MacFarlane’s dismissal from the Metropolitan Police Service sends a very clear message that using this kind of language is not acceptable and can never be justified.

She added: “I have grave concerns about what was said in the police van that day and am extremely worried that an officer of PC MacFarlane’s experience would think it appropriate to use words like ‘n****r’ and refer to a man’s ‘black skin’ in this way when he has responsibility for policing London’s diverse communities.

“While it is fortuitous in this case that this recording exists we have concerns that similar incidents are often not dealt with so effectively because complainants do not have such irrefutable evidence.”
