Michael Jackson hologram steals show at the Billboard Awards

UNCANNY: Fans enjoyed a digital hologram of a Michael Jackson at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards

A HOLOGRAM of the late pop star Michael Jackson stole the show at last night's (May 18) Billboard Awards.

The life-like 3D image performed Jacko's new song Slave To The Rhythm, taken from his new album Xscape, at the ceremony in Las Vegas.

The performance came despite the threat of an emergency injunction requested by tech companies Hologram USA and Musion seeking to block the digital performance amid claims it was being used without authorisation. But on Friday (May 16), a judge ruled that the Billboard Music Awards could use the hologram of deceased pop icon Michael Jackson at this weekend's show.

Judge Kent Dawson said there wasn't enough evidence to show the planned 3-D image would violate patents held by Hologram USA Inc. and Musion Das Hologram Ltd – the companies best known for digitally resurrecting deceased rapper Tupac Shakur at the 2012 Coachella music festival.

Nevertheless, the performance went ahead and saw the hologram of Jackson perform along with a number of backing dancers. The hologram also took on Jackson’s most iconic dance moves, including the moonwalk.
