FOLLOWING THE very sad news of Cyrille Regis’ passing, Obayed Hussain, director of West Midlands Active Citizens, and the Equality Officer for the Birmingham FA, has issued a statement.

Hussain said: “Cyrille Regis was one of football’s great pioneers. In standing up to hatred, Cyrille exhibited exceptional passion, determination and integrity in paving the way for future generations of Black, Asian and ethnic minority footballers to break through.

“His trailblazing spirit has been wide-reaching – far beyond what happened on the football pitch - and his perseverance in the face of hatred is something we will continue to champion at West Midlands Active Citizens, providing space for equality and inclusion for kids of all backgrounds.”

Regis is a legend in the Midlands having played for West Bromwich Albion, Coventry, Aston Villa and Wolves.
