Miranda Brawn Receives Honorary Doctorate from University

AWARDED: Miranda Brawn

MIRANDA BRAWN was awarded her Doctor of Letters at the esteemed University of Brighton on Friday July 28. She is recognised for her contribution to business, law, diversity and philanthropy not only in the UK but across the globe.

With her impressive list of credentials, dedication, hard work and commitment to diversity and equality, she has earned respect and admiration throughout the country and on a global basis.

Brawn, multi-award winning businesswoman, banker, barrister, diversity leader and founder and CEO of the Miranda Brawn Diversity Leadership Foundation, campaigns for an equal and diverse workforce helping to promote all forms of diversity including race, gender, LGBT and disability.

She said:

"True diversity and equality is one of the greatest challenges in the 21st century workforce. We must continue to try to find ways that the next generation can go on to succeed fulfilling their true potential.”

Born and raised in London, close to former England captain David Beckham, Brawn has had a successful career across finance, business and law. Brawn was behind the inspiring UK history making diversity leadership lecture aimed at young BAME future leaders which has won a ‘Points of Light’ Award from Prime Minister Theresa May and personal praise from HRH Prince Charles of Wales.
 
The university described Brawn as "a global force for diversity and equality" and praised her philanthropic spirit noting her commitment to diversity and equality across all sectors including finance and law.

“She has used her influence and reach as a force for good in the world, with a constant focus on the importance of diverse opportunities and the virtues of serving others. It is not an overstatement to describe Miranda and her organisation that she has founded and led so successfully a beacon of hope for the next generation and diversity, a passionate crusader for people’s rights to diversity and equality, plus a global force for good.”
 
In a speech made during the ceremony to the Class of 2017, she advised students to follow their dreams to find their perfect career.

"Work hard, take risks, focus, network, exercise persistence, give back and success will follow!" she said. 

She added:

“I consider today to be a defining milestone in my life and am delighted to receive my honorary doctorate for my positive contribution to society over the years. My values and work match those of the university's commitments where diversity and inclusion are one of their core values. We are both helping to champion and nurture inclusivity, diversity and equality to the highest levels across all sectors to deliver change.”
 
She told the audience she has enjoyed coming to the University of Brighton. She said:

“The University is unique in many ways, apart from having an inspiring female Vice-Chancellor (Professor Debra Humphris), especially where you help many students from across the UK and the globe to become a future success with a genuine focus on diversity and equality.”
 
Brawn joins an esteemed line up of previous honorary doctorate awardees, including Judge Michael Kennedy QC, creator of the Idol franchise and the Spice Girls Simon Fuller and Sarah Brown (global health and education campaigner and wife of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown).
 
For the second year in a row, The Financial Times listed Brawn as one of the top most influential global BAME business executives helping to make the world a more equal and diverse place in May 2017. 

Financial News has also listed Brawn as one of the Top 100 most influential Women in European Finance in November 2016 and in April 2017 she was featured in the Metro newspaper Top 10 UK’s females who are changing Britain.
