MISSING: Baby found with mentally ill woman

THE GUYS HILL POLICE in St Catherine, Jamaica have launched a search for the father of a one-year-old boy, who was found in the company of a mentally ill woman recently.

Police told The Star that the infant was taken from the homeless woman by residents who saw her walking around with the baby in her hand.

According to the police, the father is being sought in a case of negligence as investigations have revealed he left the baby with a blind man, which resulted in the child being with the mentally ill woman.

The police said several attempts have been made to find the father but he has proven to be very elusive. "The last thing we know he has changed address. Checks made at the new address have proven futile," a policeman told The Star.

The Star was informed that the drama unfolded recently when the child's mother left him with the father. "The child's mother reported that she left the child in the father's care," the policeman said. It is understood that the father left the child with his grandfather who is blind.

It is reported that the child was left on a bed to sleep and when he woke up, he strayed on to the street.

About 2 a.m., the police said, residents saw the child in the arms of a mentally challenged woman.

She was held and the child taken from her. The baby was later taken to the police station by the residents and following checks he was handed over to his mother.

The police said no effort will be spared to find the father as the matter is very serious.
