HATE: Thornaby mosque was defaced (photo credit: Luke Kenning)

‘MUSLIM COWARDS’ WAS been spray-painted on Thornaby mosque in Teesside just a few days after the ISIS-inspired terror attack in London Bridge last month.

Hundreds of supporters turned-up for an open day at the mosque and to show their distaste at the offensive graffiti.

Noweed Ahmad, who prays regularly at Thornaby mosque told local reporters:

“We’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much interest there has been in Thornaby community, the wider community, about us as Muslims and what we stand for.

“There's a lot of good people here in Thornaby."

Co-organiser of the open day, Zak Mahmoud, stated that the event was a “safe space to ask any questions they have, however controversial they think they are, however British they want to be and keep it to themselves and not offend anyone”.

Cleveland Police have confirmed that the graffiti incident is considered a hate crime.
