Muhammad Ali 'golliwog' scarecrow removed after complaints

RACE ROW: The scarecrow has now been removed

A SCARECROW of the late Muhammad Ali has been removed after it sparked a race row for resembling a golliwog.

The scarecrow – which imitates a man in a boxing stance – was left as a tribute to the iconic boxing star who died earlier this month, aged 74.

The life-size model has a small picket sign next to it which reads “ALI – Stings like a Bee” echoing one of his most famous quotations.

But some have seen the mannequin as provocative due to its likeness to a golliwog and after a string of complaints it has now disappeared.

A picture of the scarecrow has since been shared on Twitter – with some saying it was good-natured fun but others labelling it as casual racism.

One Twitter user described it as "rudimentary" but "good intent" whereas another described it as "startling".

"Erm. People of Devon. This is not an okay 'Tribute' to Ali," said one tweet.

"It’s rudimentary and c**p, but I reckon good intent," commented another Twitter user.

The scarecrow was created for the Awliscombe Scarecrow Competition and Tea Party which took place over the weekend.

Despite being held all over the world, scarecrow festivals are particularly popular in Britain.
