Nelson Mandela gets Freedom Of Brent award

NELSON MANDELA has been awarded the Freedom of the London borough of Brent following a 23-year campaign.

According the Twitter page of Brent Council, councillors voted unanimous for Mandela, 94, to receive the award.

Councillor Jim Moher said: "The spirit that he embodies for our communities lives on just as Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Ghandi, [and] all those figures."

The freedom fighter visited the borough in 1962 and again in 1990 for a concert at Wembley Stadium organised by the Anti-Apartheid Movement.

In 1990, the prospect of bestowing the former South African President with the honour was first muted, but an agreement couldn’t be made among councillors.

Mandela is currently in a "critical condition" in hospital in Pretoria, South Africa.

Current South African President Jacob Zuma said Mandela's doctors were "doing everything possible to get his condition to improve".
